it’s been a feral spring
wind and rain and everything
straight-line winds blow through
toppling trees, exposing roots
the saturated ground
won’t bear the weight
of anything profound
in the darkening clouds
and the angry clamor of the crowd
when i see the worried face
of my neighbor from a different place
i don’t know what to say
to stop the storm
from blowing through her way
it’s all i can do to sing
in this roar that’s deafening
to hope someone will hear
and find some respite from the fear
like the cellist in the siege
to embolden hope
is my noblesse oblige
it’s been a feral spring
wind and rain and everything
the forecast is unclear
for all the things that we hold dear
it may take some time
for the saturated ground
to hold the line
but the adagio plays on
and we find our hiding place
within the song
