election day

equally created people
all across the land
pursuing life, liberty, laughter
show up
that’s how it’s supposed to work
neighbor beside neighbor
helping each other to
keep the whole thing going
trusting each other and
even when we don’t
respecting the differences
willing to put up with a few years
when my side doesn’t always get its way

i’m still an american and
so are you
let’s go have a beer
argue till we’re blue in the face
then go home
get up and go to work tomorrow
